Mountain biking... it kicked out butts

We went out to the Pine Nuts today to go mountain biking. We went somewhere new so we didn't really know what to expect. On the way out it was all up and we were huffing and puffing like you couldn't believe. We didn't go too far out, but the way back proved to be well worth it cause it was downhill on the way out! It was fun even though we are so out of shape! It was a good workout for our lungs and legs and arms!

Also, we found out yesterday that we will be heading to Houston on June 2nd to start our internship. We have mixed feelings, but I'm sure it will be a good experience.

Basically... I'm a nerd

So, what have been doing with all my free time here in Gardnerville? Well, I'm been analyzing my daily dietary intake and geocaching. Lately I've had this desire to loose some weight OR rather maintain a healthier weight. And by analyzing my diet I mean that I've been keeping a diary of everything I eat and inputting everything into Mypyramid.gov via MyPyramid Tracker which conveniently lets me know all of my total nutrients and compare my diet to the new food pyramid as well as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005. Please, if you haven't already, do me a favor and go to MyPyramid.gov and look around because it is amazing! (I already told you I was a nerd). In addition I also got a pedometer lately and I've been walking a lot.

And may I give Julie, my mother in law, and great shout out because she has made eating so easy here. She keeps so many fresh fruits and vegetables fully stocked in the ki
tchen... it's been so wonderful. And my nutritional status has skyrocketed since I got here (not nearly as much as Drew's I imagine, however). Sadly, it is no secret that college students don't eat very well.

As for geocaching, there has been so many geocaches to find here. Today we went out to the Pine Nuts and were able to do a lot of caches outside the city. We found not only caches, but a lot of little lizards and even found a rattlesnake! It was fun and I have really got into the spirit of geocaching... meaning I am excited to find a lot more.

Fun Blurb: This fun little blurb comes from the wisdom of Drew's grandpa which I thought I should share because not only it is important information for good dental hygiene, but it was something I've never know so I presume some of you may not know.

Here it is: If you have the option/choice between brushing your teeth OR flossing CHOOSE to FLOSS. Put another way you should floss the teeth you want to keep. Now, me being an avid brusher yet not an avid "flosser" this made a big impact on me and flossing has never become so important to me as it is now. Thank you grandpa Buzz. It seems improbable that flossing alone could be more beneficial than brushing away plaque... but I think it does bring the message home.. brush +floss. Oh yes, and Drew's grandpa is a retired Dentist so it doesn't just come from anybody. Hope this helps everyone reading this to gain a belief in the power of flossing. It certainly has for me.

Recently

1.) Drew and I just returned from Austin, TX for a three day business trip for training. I've got to say that I'm a bit overwhelmed, but Drew is excited and ready to hit the ground running. We don't know exactly when we will start reviewing because applications are still being submitted. Over the three days at training we clocked in 80 hours between the both of us, but that includes travel time. Tuesday was an exceptionally long day because we worked a 12 hour day. I would have to say that Wednesday was the most exciting however since we went downtown where the capital was. We had our training that day in the Texas Department of Agriculture building and right next to it was the state museum where we had lunch at a nice cafe. On an important side note... the more I interact with CNResource the more I discover these "nice to know" facts. For example, Drew and I had anticipated to be in Houston for the summer, but at the training we were introduced as "the floaters". Ok.... thanks for letting us know. Which means we have no idea the exact location we will be other than just Texas (which is a huge expanse of places we could be.) It also means that we will be traveling a lot to many different places. Fun, but also very exhausting and hard. In a way it's nice because Houston may be too humid for me. Then... as we are riding in the rental car back to Austin we find out that we will only be traveling together 90% of the time which had never been previously noted to us before... again, good to know.
I would have to admit that after being in Austin I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like it there and the humidity as well. The city is way too busy and crowded, but it is nice, green, and beautiful. I couldn't help but think to myself that I wouldn't mind living there at all!

2.) The day we returned from Texas we arrived home at 1am (3am Texas time) and we so exhausted that we slept in most of Thursday. When we got up we decided to be productive. I guess this was an good as any time to make my move to Nevada official. Which means that, sad to say, I do not have a Colorado drivers license anymore. Gasp!! I have been very diligent not to get a license in Utah so that I would never be tagged a "Utahn", but it was inevitable that I would have to turn over my Colorado driver's license eventually. I keep looking at my Nevada state driver's license and just kinda sigh and get sorta teary. No not really, but I am very disappointed. Oh, and the DMV here is a million times better than Colorado. Get this, we drive up to the DMV and walk in a not a single person was in there... unheard of! In Ft. Collins I arrived at 8am and didn't get my number called until 4:30 pm!! Since I was under 25 yrs old I had to take a written driving test. I was really surprised and then the thought popped in my head 'what if I fail?' To my surprise, I passed.... and I say "to my surprise" because I nearly failed. There were some really technical questions and some really dumb questions that I missed! For example, I had no idea how many demerits you can receive within a 12 month period, and how many times you can go to traffic school to clear demerits in a 12 month period. I sure am glad that I passed because I would have been so embarrassed!

3.) I took Drew to get surgery on his eye. Although the procedure only took a total of 15 minutes... I had to wait in the lobby for 2 hours! It was worth it though because poor Drew couldn't have drove himself home in his condition. As we were leaving the parking lot his eye started bleeding again covering his whole eye in blood and it really freaked me out. It stopped though and he was fine. I was mad though cause I really wanted to watch the operation! The cyst is caused by a clogged oil secreting gland in the eye and I guess when they took it out the assistant described it as a big white ball of grease! Man! I wish I could have seen that procedure!

Fun times!

Eye goop

Yesterday I had a Chalazion removed from my eye. It's a big cyst that grows on the eyelid, composed of white and yellow stuff. it had been there for almost 3 months before the doctor would take care of it. So, sitting in the chair, the doctor first puts some numbing drops in, them he gives 5 shots of a numbing agent, I don't know which, into the eye lid. Possibly the most painful thing I've experienced besides teeth extractions. Then, some numbing compound under the eyelid, applied with a q-tip. Then some more drops, then a few more shots, and some more compound. Finally, after about 10 minutes, he's ready to go in. He uses a clamp to grip the eye lid, flips it inside out, then makes an incision under the eye lid. he scoops out the crap, uses 2 q-tips to clean it out real nice, then he's done. That whole process took about 60 seconds, maximum. It wasn't all that bad, but the shots hurt like crazy. Today, there's still some redness, and some swelling, and my eyes are constantly leaking eye goop. If you want to know more, look it up on wikipedia. It's interesting stuff. Overall, it wasn't too bad. I'd say the worst part was having to wait for an hour in the doctor's office before I could see him. So if you ever have a Chalazion, fear not, because it's not that bad.

Just another day

These last few days in Nevada have been great. We've done exactly what we wanted, and most of what I have wanted to do is nothing. I've been golfing once already and plan to go much more. Ive started going to bed earl and waking up early, if you consider 8am early. I do.
Monday morning we leave for training in Austin and will be back late Wednesday night. It's a bummer of a travel schedule though. We have to be in Reno at 6am, which means we leave the house a 5am. We get back at 11:20 pm which will mean we'll be home probably around 1am. But, for 2 days training and 6 hours flying each way, this company managed the schedule pretty well. very efficient use of time.
Penguins are in the Eastern Conference finals against the cross-town rival Flyers. Penguins took game 1 with game 2 tomorrow night. I have high hopes for my Pens this year. Lend your support and watch them on VS, Sunday, Tues, and Thurs nights. Go Pens!

Graduation & Relocation

It feels so surreal that graduation was last Friday! It went by so fast and now I am so relieved. My mom came down for graduation and she even bought me this wonderful bouquet of flowers! I didn't think graduation would be so fun, but it was great and went by so fast!! After graduation my mom took us out to dinner at Chili's with my grandma and my aunt. Afterwards we were able to tour the new Gordon B. Hinckley Building. I've never been in to look around, but it was beautiful of course. On Saturday we started packing up everything! My mom was such a lifesaver and she was able to help me almost get the whole kitchen packed up. Over Saturday and Sunday we were able to box up all the major stuff in time to pick up our moving truck on Monday morning. Our neighbor, J.P. , was so helpful and he helped Drew and I pack up all the couches, the bed, and furniture plus all the boxes. With his help it only took up about an hour and a half to pack up everything that we had prepared. For the rest of the day we cleaned and packed up all the odds and ends. Our plan was to leave on Tuesday morning, but severe winds over Nevada prevented us from leaving. Since we had packed and cleaned everything we had nothing to do really. We didn't even have any food leftover, we had used it all up for our BBQ with our neighbors Monday night. In the end, it was so nice to leave one day later because we could just relax and enjoy our last day in Provo. We slept in (on the floor with our mattress pad that is), ran some errands, hiked up Rock Canyon, ate out for lunch and dinner, and started the series Heroes! Now we are completely hooked on the TV series. We are still in the middle of watching Season 1, but it's so addicting!
On Wednesday we got up early and got ready to leave at 8am. It had been really hard to leave Provo because it's been so good to us and we have so many friends there. However, we are very excited to explore a new city and we're excited to start this new chapter in our lives too. After a grueling 10 hour drive to Nevada with the moving truck we finally made it. I've really become accustomed to Drew driving everywhere so it was interesting having to drive the whole way with both Jinxy and Sake trying to sleep on my lap. We had to stop several times to refuel the truck because it only gets 9 miles to the gallon! We arrived in Gardnerville around 5:30 or 6:00pm and Drew's parents and grandparents came out to greet us and help us unload the truck. Now everything that we own is in his parents garage. We'll be living in Gardnerville temporarily until we go out to Houston for out internship then come back and live here until we find an apartment in Reno in time for Drew to start school. Today we have been running more errands and arranging our things. It was especially liberating today when I went to the public library to check out a bunch of books! Yes... reading for leisure finally. I checked out 4 books and Drew had to drag me out. I made a whole list of books in my head of things I still need to read! As I was walking out of the library with books in hand and a huge smile I had to say, maybe I should become a librarian! I miss working at the library and I miss being surrounded with books all the time. There's so much to learn and read! We are definitely enjoying our freedom and all the comforts of home. Drew's mom made us lasagna last night and Drew's grandma made us waffles with strawberries and bacon this morning. It was so wonderful to have a home cooked meal! We are so wonderfully spoiled here!
